Synopsis
Dani refuses to lose another parent due to her absence from their life. After pulling herself back together following the death of her father, she moves back to her childhood town to live with her mom. She’s slowly pulled back into the lifestyle she worked so hard to get away from ten years ago. She accepts that this is the life she has always been destined to live. Getting a job at the store down the road and hooking back up with her first love Gage, seems to be the logical way to go…that is until Holden Reynolds shows up in town.
Now that Holden is finally back home from the Navy he plans on following in his father’s footsteps. Still trying to move on from the one woman who had his heart, he busies himself in work and returning to the country boy lifestyle he’s always loved. The best way to get over someone is to get under someone, right? That’s his mindset as he travels town to town with his job perfectly content with being a rambling man…that is until he meets Danielle Brooks.
When Dani isn't leaving and Holden isn't staying will they be able to keep themselves from getting too attached? Or will they be just what each other needs to cut all the strings that have them bound?

Dani, poor Dani. She is just putting up with everyone else's BS and is not getting anything out of life other than crap. She is a good person with even a bigger heart. Dani is fed up with her step sister and brother and their drug habit. She is pissed with how they treat their mother and upset that her mother does nothing about it. The bigger issue is Dani is stuck in a rut. She has not gotten over her fathers death and now feels that she needs to save her mother and those around her.
"Holden it doesn't matter what I want. I gave that up months ago."
Holden is working for his father doing a job he wants nothing to do with. Moving from town to town just to please him. After losing the one woman he loved Holden is complacent with his life. Once in a new town Holden sees Dani and is drawn to her in a way that he did not think was possible. He wants more with her and spending time with her is making him realize that he wants what ever he can get from Dani.
"No, Dani. And neither will I. So hold on as tight as you need to. I got you. I won't let you fall."
Gage was Dani's first love and she left him when she escaped the town they grew up in. Now that she is back Gage is still in love with her and wants nothing more than to win her back. But Gage has his own problems. Can her win her over?
Their story was about learning to trust and love not only each other but mostly for them both to learn to love themselves and that it is okay to put yourself first. Dani was living day by day putting one foot in front of the other. It took a while for Dani to get her stuff together and understand that you don't always have to rescue everyone, even if they are your family. You must first love yourself, love who you are, then you can love those around you.

I hate all the feelings that were brought out from hiding tonight. I’m damn sure that I kept them in check — for the most part anyways. Slipping every now and then and flirting with Danielle wasn’t harmful. Or was it? Who am I fucking kidding? The feelings I had for her are still the same. Truth of the matter is I’ve never gotten over her. She’s the one who got away. How do you get over that one when no one else will ever compare? You consume your mind and body with other things, that’s how. And that’s exactly what I’ve been doing the last ten years. Consuming my mind with work and mind numbing substances while over consuming my body with meaningless sex. The only meaningful sex I have ever had was with her…the one that I let go. The one that I never chased after. I should have gone with her.
“Huh?” she asks with a look of confusion. Fuck, I must have said that out loud.
“I’m just delirious. Don’t mind me.” I try to play it off, hoping she won’t pry, but she does because she’s wanting to be chatty fucking Kathy or something. She really doesn’t want me to open the can of worms that’s been stagnant for a decade. “It’s nothing, Dani.” The slight shudder tells me what no one else would even notice. Using the nickname still gets to her. I noticed the same movement in her body at the bar. I never called her by any of her nicknames unless I was pissed at her. Maybe it was stupid, but since everyone else shortened her name I had always wanted to use the real deal — the one no one else used.
I reach for the doorknob knowing I want to do anything but leave, but not sure that’s even an option until she speaks up. “Wait.” I turn around to face her and try to conceal my smile. She looks so damn cute acting all nervous scanning our surroundings before her eyes find mine. “Why don’t you just stay here? I mean, you really shouldn’t be driving all the way home. Plus, I’m not very tired,” she yawns. “Maybe we can catch up some.”
“Are you sure?” I ask double checking because I don’t want to overstep any boundaries.
“Yes, I’m sure. Honestly, I’ve missed you and really want to just chat. I haven’t really just sat down and talked with anyone in a very long time.” The look on her face is sad, and I know she means since her dad died. I’m not sure the whole situation at her mom’s house, but if I had to guess I’m sure there isn’t much constructive talking going on there. I know her step siblings better than I’d like to, but as long as they aren’t causing me trouble, I don’t mind them.
“I’ve missed you too.” I admit as I make my way to the couch and sit down. I pull my hat off and toss it on the floor and stretch my arms as far as I can while pushing my legs out and letting out a noise as I do. I catch Danielle checking me as I readjust my shirt back down from where it lifted. “Like whatcha see?” I tease obviously knowing the answer.
“You sure have filled out.” She says not taking her eyes off my body. I feel like she’s undressing me in her mind. It makes me feel so violated. Not really. I actually love the idea of her openly gawking me.
“Wouldn’t you like to know how filled out I am?” I wink and that statement causes her to blush once the realization of what I’m talking about clicks.
“Perv. I swear.” She hits me with the throw pillow. “Will you ever grow up?” She asks as she rolls her eyes trying real damn hard to hide the fact that she would like to explore my filled out body.
I hold my hands up in my defense, “Who was checking who out?”
“No shame over here. You’ve always been a hottie, Gage. But you sure have thickened up the last ten years.”
I laugh, “Now who’s the perv?” It’s fun messing with her. It keeps me from thinking about the resentment I had started to feel towards her over the years. I’m stuck here. No getting around it. And she bailed on me. I had felt that she didn’t love me enough to stay. If you love someone, you stay. You don’t go out to make a better life on your own. You stay and make the best with what you have. That’s what I’ve been trying really hard to do these last years. The mechanic shop is what it is and the business we get is decent. Same with the women. I’ve probably slept with all the decent ones in town, but none of them are keepers. I’m sure they’d settle down with me in a heartbeat, but since I’ve settled with everything else in my life, the last thing I’m wanting to do is settle for someone that will only make my life more miserable.
