Blurb

I met a boy once.
He made my heart go into a frenzy every time he looked at me, and my knees go weak whenever he touched me. Our love was so beautiful that even its demise was bittersweet.
I met a girl once.
Her world, full of possibilities, made me feel like even I had a chance at being someone. She believed in me. She loved me. We were so secure, that even our breaking point seemed hazy.
Until we reached it.

Review: The Bourbon Kings by J.R. Ward

The #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Black Dagger Brotherhood delivers the first novel in an enthralling new series set amid the shifting dynamics of a Southern family defined by wealth and privilege—and compromised by secrets, deceit, and scandal....

For generations, the Bradford family has worn the mantle of kings of the bourbon capital of the world. Their sustained wealth has afforded them prestige and privilege—as well as a hard-won division of class on their sprawling estate, Easterly. Upstairs, a dynasty that by all appearances plays by the rules of good fortune and good taste. Downstairs, the staff who work tirelessly to maintain the impeccable Bradford facade. And never the twain shall meet.

For Lizzie King, Easterly’s head gardener, crossing that divide nearly ruined her life. Falling in love with Tulane, the prodigal son of the bourbon dynasty, was nothing that she intended or wanted—and their bitter breakup only served to prove her instincts were right. Now, after two years of staying away, Tulane is finally coming home again, and he is bringing the past with him. No one will be left unmarked: not Tulane’s beautiful and ruthless wife; not his older brother, whose bitterness and bad blood know no bounds; and especially not the ironfisted Bradford patriarch, a man with few morals, fewer scruples, and many, many terrible secrets.

As family tensions—professional and intimately private—ignite, Easterly and all its inhabitants are thrown into the grips of an irrevocable transformation, and only the cunning will survive.

MY REVIEW  4 STARS
Addictive, with the right amount of lies and betrayal.

The story was not easy to get into at first.  It took a little time and then boom, I was unable to put it down.  This family was beyond dysfunctional.  First off, I hate the dad.  Really, really hate him.  But that is what makes a great book.  This book should be made into a television series.

This is the second book from the author I read.  I was sucked in slowly.  There are many dynamics to all the characters.  Everyone one of them has a purpose and they blend well.  I never got confused when the book switched POVs and I could in-vision the story as I was reading.

J.R Ward wrote a story unlike anything I am used to.  She weaved many details, hints and deciete into this book, and now I am unsure how the next book will start or end.

Lane returning back to his childhood home took an act of god.  He has been gone for over two years and had no intentions of returning.  His hate for his parents and wife were enough to have him leave and never look back.  But all it took was one phone call, and he is home.  With his appearance, everything around him starts to fall apart.  The family secrets keep pilling up and his hate for his father just continues to rise.

Lizzie was afraid that Lane would show up after getting news that would make him come home. Seeing him on his family estate was more than she could handle.  Seeing his wife was not easy as well.  The more she is around Lane, the more she starts to fall for him again.

This story is not just about Lane and Lizzie.  Edward is the eldest brother and has nothing to do with his family.  Virginia aka Gin is the only daughter of the Baldwins and is really messed up.  I am on the fence with her.  Chantal... the wife of Lane.  She is delusional if you ask me.  Miss Aurora, I have nothing but kind words for this woman.  Oh, I can't forget the father William Baldwin.  I HATE HIM!

I have so many theories about this book.  Tons of unanswered questions remain, and I cannot wait to see how this is going to end.

Addictive...5 stars
"He was the Loud to my quiet, the confidence to my shyness, the rage to my pain.  Separately, we were broken and alone.  Together we were blissfully happy and complete..."

Move over Book Boyfriends, there is a new player in town and he goes by the name Cormac O'Connell.  This man will make you swoon, light your heart on fire and prove that true love does exist.  R.J. Prescott has written an epic love story.

I really liked Emily's character.  She was hiding, barley getting by, afraid of everyone, and untrusting.  Given her past it was spot on, nothing exaggerated.  She meets a cranky old man named Danny at her waitressing job and though she may be terrified of the man (or anyone) after a year, she considers him a friend.  Danny hires her to help him with his books at his boxing gym.

All the boxers at the gym welcome Emily into the family and in the beginning she was afraid, but over time learned that these men were not going to hurt her.  It took some time but she soon learned that she was part of this family, something that she did not have.

Now to the main attraction...Cormac O'Connell!  This man, damn, he is everything that you never knew you wanted.  He is not rich, in fact he is dirt poor. But he has drive and a heart of platinum.  He was doing his own thing until he sees Emily and he sees his future with her by his side.  O'Connell finally decides to get serious about boxing.

The friendship they created held my attention and kept me praying nothing bad would come their way.  Both learned how to trust and lean on the other for strength, making them a team that was unbreakable.

My Favorite moments....

When they decided to be "friends, just friends."

EXCERPT
He grabbed my hand and pulled me to a stop facing him. He moved in so close that our noses were almost touching.
“Tell me you can feel this. I need to know I’m not the only one,” he spoke gently.
“I feel it,” I whispered, staring at the ground. “But I’m not doing anything about it. Everything that you make me feel is completely overwhelming, and I can’t give you what you need, not even close. I don’t want to talk about why I am this way, but just offering you friendship is a big deal for me right now.”
I finished my rant feeling more desperate than ever. This big, strong, beautiful, terrifying man had feelings for me, but seriously how long would they last? I was getting better, but I was afraid of my own shadow most of the time. I was small, weak, and lacked any self-confidence. O’Connell was dangerous, addictive, and so sexy that I was consumed by lust every time we were in the same room together. He used his body like a weapon and the danger attracted women like a magnet. With that many women, all vying for his attention, what little charm I held for him would fade like mist in the morning sun. If I let him in, he had the power to break what little of me was left whole when I couldn’t keep him.
Reaching out one giant, scarred and calloused hand, he tucked a wayward curl behind my ear. He lifted my chin with his knuckle forcing me to meet his gentle gaze. He looked so happy and intense right now that I could feel my eyes welling up. I never thought that anyone would ever look at me like that.
“I know I’m scary and loud. I’m fucked up, and I’m gonna fuck up with you a lot because I’ve never done this before. I don’t date girls, I fuck them and walk away because that’s what they expect. It’s all they think I’m good for. I’m not smart like you, and I know I don’t deserve you. Right now, I’m dirt poor, but one day, I’m not gonna be. I will fight to make something better of myself, to be someone better. Someone you can be proud of. If you need time, then I’ll give you time. If you need friendship, then I’ll give you friendship. But you’re mine, and when the time is right, when you’re ready, I’m coming for you.”
I nodded, so close to tears I knew that if I tried to speak, I’d completely break down. I swallowed hard, and the tears fell anyway. O’Connell wiped them away with his thumb and gently pressed his big firm lips to mine. Just like that, my fears were forgotten. The kiss was gentle, but fireworks exploded all over my body. It was like he had invigorated every cell with life. The touch of his lips wasn’t enough to satisfy, only to feed my addiction. I knew in my head that I wasn’t ready for a relationship, but my body wanted to drown in the revelation that it could feel something other than cold, hunger, and pain. It was a kiss both chaste and pure and everything I hoped that my first kiss would be, because everything I gave to him, I gave freely. Slightly out of breath, our lips parted, and he rested his forehead back against mine.
“I’m gonna give you the fuckin world, baby,” he whispered against my lips.
He kissed me again quickly and grinning like a kid, threaded his fingers through mine.
“You know friends don’t hold hands,” I whispered, knowing that there was no way that I was letting go first.

“Huh,” he grunted. “Me and Kier hold hands all the time.”
