“Worn me down like a road. I did everything you told. Worn me down to my knees.
I did everything to please.”
Austin Conrad has never taken his personal life seriously. As a Navy SEAL, he spends all of his time in dangerous, life-threatening situations. The only way to leave behind the horrors he’s seen throughout his career, is to turn it all off when he gets home. He’s too much of a playboy to settle down; even if he did find a woman he could stand to be around for more than one night, he would never taint her life with the demons of his past.
When his best friend and SEAL team member, Brady Marshall asks him to keep an eye on his baby sister, Gwen, Austin figures it will be a walk in the park. The only thing Austin likes more than flirting his way under a beautiful woman’s skin, is walking away with a smile on his face. Austin never expects that the single mom and her little girl will be the ones getting under his skin.
Gwen Stratford knows all too well about living in a nightmare. After taking her daughter and fleeing from her abusive husband in the middle of the night several months ago, she’s worked hard to get her life back on track and forget about the man who tried to break her. Growing up under the iron thumb of her parents and then moving right on with a man who ruled their marriage with his fists, Gwen is finally able to breathe and live her life the way she wants.
When scary, mysterious things begin to happen to Gwen and her daughter, she realizes you can never outrun your past; it always has a way of catching up with you. As she struggles with the desire to keep her newfound independence, she knows she won’t be able to protect herself and her child alone. She’ll need to lean on the one man who drives her crazy.
Can Gwen really put her trust in a man who thinks life is one big joke, or will he be just another man in her life who tries to wear her down?

My Review  4 STARS

I hope no one kills me for giving this 4 stars. I am a huge fan of Tara and I love everything she has written so far.  I think her humor is deathly funny and now she wrote The Playing With Fire Series which I love.

So Brady (Gwen's Brother) asks Austin to look after his sister while he is away, Austin agrees because she is a spitfire that he wants.  She is beautiful and mouthy to him.  That just makes it all the better right?  Well all is fair in love and war.

Gwen is hiding from her husband whom she ran from in the middle of the night along with her daughter.  After years in an abusive relationship, she is done.  Gwen knows if she stays, he will end up killing her.  So she goes to the one person that will protect her, her brother Brady.  He does not know all of her secrets but is the only one that will protect her.

Now once Austin and Gwen are forced to "be around" one another they feel the chemistry that they both have for the other.  Austin is not really the man he sees himself as.  Yes he is a SEAL,, yes he is gone a lot, but he really is a kind hearted man who puts others before him.  Does he make a few idiot moves?  Yup, he sure does.

Gwen has been through Hell and back, she is a strong woman that is fighting to be whole again.  The horror that she lived through was unthinkable.  Living 10 years like that and being able to walk away and still be normal...Well she is stronger than most women.  I just don't know where I would be if I were her and went through all that abuse.

As they spend a little bit of time together they find that they have a connection that even though they fight it, both will loose.  I think Austin is my favorite so far.  He is so sure he can not be the man that Gwen sees in him.  Yet he  is finding that he wants her and wants to be a family.

I know I am jumping around with this review but I just can't seem to go further into details BECAUSE it will give away a lot of spoilers and most of hate spoilers.  So bare with me on this and read the book, there is so much more to the story that took me by surprise and I loved it.  Tara has a way of writing that pulls you into the story as if you are living it, whether it is funny or serious.
