Dare to Take by Carly Phillips

A one night stand.
A secret.
A mistake they tried to forget.

On leave from the army, Tyler Dare was just looking for a little fun, but his sister's best friend is off limits. But unable to deny how sexy and alluring she is, he finds it all too easy to succumb to a night of passion and heat that ends the next morning in the worst way possible.

There are just some guys you don't touch--even someone as innocent and inexperienced as Ella Shaw knows that. But when her best friend's brother is up for grabs and willing, she can't resist. After all, she's wanted him for years…

Now, Ella is stranded on a tropical island with a hurricane bearing down, and only Tyler can save her. It's his chance to make amends for the past and show the woman he's never forgotten that he's coming after her . . . in more ways than one.

My review 4 stars

This is book 6 in the series but, each book can be read as a standalone.

Both Tyler and Ella have a past, ones they are not proud of but after a mugging gone wrong, Tyler needs to keep Ella safe as he realizes it was intentional.  This one event made them both address not only that one night but their past that shaped who they are now and what they wanted for their future.

Ms. Phillips put together a book that addressed real situations and how two people danced around them until they could not be ignored. There is heart break and redemption along the way but I hope you will enjoy Tyler and Ella's story as well as the rest of the Dare family.

Synopsis
Taylor Shaw had the perfect life—until she was sixteen. That was when everything changed. From that moment on, life went from bad to worse…to the worst. After recovering from a brain tumor, months later, she suffers the tragic loss of her whole family. Since that fateful day, she’s been coasting through life.
Now, the brain tumor has returned, and Taylor decides she’s had enough. She’s going to take her fate into her own hands. No more hospitals. No more surgeries. No more anything. She’s going to join her family. It’s her decision. What she longs for. The ending she wants.
She just has a list of things to do before she goes. First, go to England. Second, kiss a stranger…
Only, Taylor didn’t expect Liam Hunter, the stranger—with his handsome face, his six-foot-three of gorgeousness, and his oh-so-hot English accent—to change things. To change her. To change the ending she wanted.
What is a girl, who is standing on the edge of nothing, to do when offered the chance of everything?

A Note from Samantha: Writing The Ending I Want has been a cathartic and exhausting process for me, but I have loved every second of writing it. I relate to this story more than any of the stories that I’ve written before. Maybe that’s because there’s a piece of me in this book. And not in Taylor having a brain tumor, because fortunately I’ve never had to endure anything like that. But for me, it was the need to feel free from something that has crippled me for many years, just like Taylor is crippled by her own pain. Taylor wanted to die to be free. I never wanted to die, but I did want to be free, in a way that’s hard to explain. But now, after years of feeling trapped by my demons, things that have held me back in life, I’ve found a way to get the freedom I needed. I’m still a work in progress, but I’m working better now than I ever did before - just saying this cryptic stuff out loud is a big step for me. So, writing Taylor in the way I did was a big deal for me. I really hope that you love this story, and see strength in Taylor's choices rather than weakness.
The Ending I Want Teaser 1
Excerpt
Go to England. Kiss a stranger. Have lots of sex,” his deep voice rumbles out the words I wrote. He glances at me over his shoulder, a shit-eating grin on his face. I don’t even bother with trying to get the list back now. What’s the point? He’s already seen it. Bastard. I fall back into my seat, my face feeling like a blowtorch went at it. “You’re an asshole,” I mutter. He turns to face me, my list in his hand but still held out of my reach. “Aw, don’t be like that, Taylor, from Boston. I was just curious to read it.” I’m pretty sure he’s going for contrite, but he’s failing miserably. I glare at him. I’m going for death-by-laser stare. It doesn’t work because he gives me a panty-dropping smile. I’d like to say I’m unaffected, but I’m not; however, I don’t let him know that. “Curious? I don’t think so. An effing thief? Yes.” He laughs. “I’m sorry. But you don’t need to be embarrassed. It’s a good list.” He looks back to my list. “Have sex with a stranger,” he continues on reading. “Have sex with a stranger outdoors. You do know I can help you with all of these, right?” He lifts a brow at me. I give him the middle finger. He laughs again and looks back to the list. Then, he stops laughing and stares at me with what can only be described as complete horror. “You’ve never had oral sex?” Fuck. Why the hell did I put that on my list? Playlist

Ladies Man by Katy Evans

Tahoe Roth.
Irreverent, cocky, playful and naughty.
He’s not the guy you date.
He’s the one night stand.
The one your mother warned you about.
The one your body craves.

You’d think the man who called me succulent would want to strip me down and spread me out on his bed—like he’s done with countless others.

But he passed on my offer….

Just like I’d once passed on his.

He’s wary, like I am.

He’s broken, like I am.

And everyone knows two broken parts can’t ever make a whole.

Tahoe and I are strictly friends.

So I distract myself with other men.

He doesn’t think my new man is good enough. This blond blue-eyed beast doesn’t think any man is—himself included.

But the more time we spend together, the more confused I feel.
I'm trying to open myself to love.

Yet I'm quickly realizing that the only man I want is Tahoe Roth.
The one man who will surely break my heart.

My Review
5 stars

Ok, Ladies I had fun reading this book and I can't wait to hear what y'all think of it too.  This is Regina and Tahoe's story.

So let's get started.

Regina is friends with Rachel and Tahoe is friends with Saint.  They are both insanely attracted to one another but Tahoe will not make a move.  He knows Regina deserves someone better than him.  They build one of the most beautiful friendships throughout the book.

This book is in a league of its own.  Every single emotion known to man is practically in this book.  If I had a heart monitor on, well that sucker would have broken and the replacement one would have died out too.  Katy had me scared to keep going because I was not sure what was going to happen next.

Regina has had her heart broken, not just from men but her life has seemed to keep her from really letting people see her true self.  With Rachel getting married and Wynn who was supposed to move in with her, she is at a point in her life where finding her self worth is difficult.  Her last break up with Paul was her breaking point.  He told her he didn't love her and left.

"He didn't say more. He left and closed the door.  I heard the wheels of his luggage fade into the distance.  And after two years together, after a hundred I love yous, after falling in love for the first time, I never heard from that cheating, lying asshole again."

Gina was not your usual girl, she had been through a lot and learned to show people that she is happy, but with the changes in her friends lives that affect hers she is unsure of what to do.  She wanted to be happy and have someone love her but that seemed like it was out of reach.

"My makeup is definitely my mask, the mask that makes me strong, pretty, whatever I want to be.  I like helping other women put on masks too.  I never want any woman in this world to be half-dresses and wearing no make-up, with a toothbrush in her mouth, when she's being broken up with."

This right here is where I started to understand her and heart hurt for Regina.  She clearly had been let down more than once and trusting was not something that came easy for her.  As for her relationship with Tahoe, this one is for the record books.  You want to stand in the background and scream "kiss her" with every encounter they have.  Take her against the wall, or better yet lock them in a room and tell them they can't come out until the seals the deal.   I  mean really...they needed to do something, anything other than what they weren't doing.

Tahoe had me wanting to throw things at him including myself.  He pissed me off and had me swooning at the same time.  He is protective of Gina and yet he is straight up honest with her.

"Don't sleep with her tonight.  Are you going to sleep with her tonight, Tahoe?"
"Yes, Regina, I am going to sleep with her tonight."
I want to scream, Why? What does she have that I don't? What do they all have that I don't?

Reading that broke me a little...

But what keeps me going is the relationship and the banter they share.  He is the first person she runs to or calls when something happens good or bad.  He is her night in shining armor, her T-Rex and he really does love her.

"Get under the sheets.  You'll have a warm bed tonight, Regina."  I open my mouth to speak, but no words come out.  Cuddling and a warm bed...friends do that, too, right?

I am telling you right now, Tahoe Roth is taking over in the BBF department.  He is everything rolled into one big package.  And after a story like this, well you will want your own T-Rex, if you don't have one already.

He's my best friend.  The only person I love to be with, want to be with, always.  He's the only man I've ever wanted like this.

This book is what relationships are about, friendship, trust and love.

Forgetting August - Remembering Everly by J.L. Berg

Captivating love story that proves, soul mates exist.

Starting with Forgetting August...

This book is written in dual POVs

Everly Adams has lived the past two years running, running from her past and trying to forget what happened two years ago.  She is in a good place, has new friends, a fiancé who she loves dearly.  All is good until she gets a phone call that soon will tilt her world upside down.

"My heart began to beat frantically as mu hand sought out something solid to hold me up.  I knew it was coming.  Like a freight train in the middle of the night, I could see the light off in the distance...I knew what was coming.

Who was coming.

"He's awake."

August has been in a coma for the last two years.  He awakes to learn not only can he not remember his past, but no one has been by to visit him while he was in a coma.

"Did anyone ever come to see me?  Family, friends-anyone?"
Her lips pursed together as her face fell.  "No, sir. Not since I've been here."
"And how long has the been?"
I've been working this wing for a little over a year and a half, sir."

Lucky for August, the hospital had kept some of his belongings and found a picture of Everly and him.   Someone was able to track her down so he can see if he remembers her.  Everly has been hiding a secret for so long, that when she goes to visit him she is terrified he will remember.  Luckily he doesn't, but August is taken back with how afraid Everly is of him.

August is drawn to Everly, he wants answers to who he was, what he did and Everly is the key to his questions.  He needs to spend time with her to see if he can remember who he was.  Even though he doesn't remember anything from his past, he knows deep down inside Everly is who has his heart.  The fact she is engaged to someone else makes him sick and he wants to have her in his life once again.

This book is a top read for me, I enjoyed reading and trying to figure out what Everly knew and if August was ever going to remember.  The story flowed and held my attention throughout, I strongly recommend this book.

REMEMBERING EVERLY

4 stars

This is the final book in the Lost and Found Series.

If you read the last part of Forgetting August, you know we were left with a cliffhanger.  This picks right up where we were left hanging.  August remembers EVERYTHING.

August is trying to uncover the spots from his past as he remembers who he was.  Now he understands why Everly was afraid of him and his fear is becoming that man again.  He knows something is off with Trent, but without the proof he is stuck in a hole that he cannot get out of.  Without all his memories he has to try to figure out why Trent is so angry and why he is being threatened by him.

August and Everly have an undying bond, it didn't matter if one of them couldn't remember their past.  Their heart and soul knew that it belonged to the other, time couldn't change that.  They had to go through heartache and trials to get back to one another.  With the help of friends and councilors who let me just say really added to the story and made it better, August and Everly have a chance at making things work.

I was expecting more from this book (I'm not sure what though), but the author delivered on a different level, and this is what I love most about reading.

Heartfall by J.B. McGee

Claire Ross has never been good enough. Not for the girls in the elite group of dancers in her class and certainly not for the approval of her ballet teacher, Mr. Robins. She definitely doesn’t like what she sees in the mirror. Simply put, she doesn’t love herself, so how could she possibly love someone else?

After twelve years of friendship, Sebastian Reyes’ adoring gaze holds more. They soon find themselves unable to control their feelings for one another.

When tragedy strikes, Claire finds herself in a very unlikely and unfavorable position. Regardless of the weight of the emotion, she must make difficult decisions that impact the rest of her life.

Will Claire see that her true love has been right in front of her? Happily ever after isn’t just for fairy tales. To get hers, all she has to do is trust, open her heart and fall.

“I gotta go. I’m sure my mom is waiting on me.”
“I need you to put your shoes back on and come with me for a minute.”
I shake my head. “I can’t, Sebastian.”
His eyes are pleading with me. I’ve known him almost my entire life, and I’m not sure why it’s so important, but he’s serious. “She’ll be mad if she sees people leaving and I’m not out there.”
“Tell her you got held up…in trouble with Robins.”
I laugh. “Sad thing is she would probably believe that.”
“Hurry up.”
“Why didn’t you tell me this before I changed?” I roll my eyes and plop down on a bench.
He paces in front of me, rubbing his hands together. “Stupid Audrina wanted to practice something.”
“Of course she did.”
“C’mon, Claire.” He rolls his hands together like he’s doing some disco dance or something.
“Your jig isn’t helping. Chill.” I take a couple of deep breaths. The truth of the matter is that he’s had me breaking all kinds of rules, living on the edge today. My nerves started out as these perfectly polished and sparkly little crystals. And then in a matter of hours, he’s managed to add some air and heat then spin them into cotton candy. Sticky, messy, bundles of the same crystals waiting for him to slowly devour at his leisure. “You’re making me nervous.”
“You think I’m making you nervous?”
I glance up through my lashes. “Yeah.”
“Funny.”
I tuck my bows under the ribbons and stand up. “Okay. All finished. Now what did you want with me?”
We walk back into the studio through one of the back doors. Robins is at the front desk chatting with some of the company moms about tomorrow. Nutcracker tryouts. I can’t believe I forgot.
Sebastian turns and faces me. We’re in the same spot as we were earlier before Audrina so rudely interrupted us the second time.
I cover my mouth. “I forgot about tomorrow being Nutcracker tryouts. Robins didn’t even mention it in class.”
“I didn’t.”
“Well, of course you didn’t.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Nothing.” It means you’re making me a total mess, Sebastian. But of course, you’re completely level-headed. Mom said this would happen. And I’m about to get in trouble. Busted. Probably grounded. Boy trouble. Let the fun begin. “What did you want?”
“I want you to pirouette then fall backward and let me catch you.”
“Absurd. And I don’t have time for this.” I shake my head. “Sebastian, I don’t know what you’re trying to prove. It’s sweet, but I’m never going to be your partner.”
He balls his fists and clenches his eyes closed. I’ve seen him pissed at Robins. They get into it all the time. “Just do it, Claire.”
“Fine.” I huff. I do a passé relevé, push my feet into the floor, and pull my ribs in as my body starts to turn. Finally, when the momentum starts going, unaware of where Sebastian is, I have to totally trust him, and I let my body fall backward. “Ahh.” My scream is muffled as my body is flipped and my face lands against his mouth. The kiss is quick.
“Shh. I’ve got you. Thank you for sparing my balls.”
I sigh in his arms and start to giggle.
He grins and puts his finger over my lips. “I don’t want Robins to kick us out. Before Audrina interrupted us, I was trying to show you something.” He puts his hands back on my hips. “Hand in mine.” I put my hand in his, and he rests his other one on my hip. “Promenade into an arabesque en pointe and watch yourself in the mirror.”
Doing as I’m told, I try to forget that my mother is probably ready to scold me or rip me a new one in the car. Never mind the disturbing thought she may have to even come in to get me. What would she say if she saw me in Sebastian’s arms after our conversation last night? She knows I’m not his partner. She knows I’m not even doing partners work. Would she be happy for me? Or would she know I was just doing this because I liked him? Focus, Claire. Now’s not the time to be distracted. Focus.
“Do you see yourself, Claire? Do you see what I see in the mirror?” he asks.
I shake my head. “I don’t know.”
“I see grace. I see beauty. I see so much potential. Lift your head up.”

When he tells me to do something, I don’t even think twice. My head automatically lifts. Is that how this partner thing works? It just comes naturally like that? And do bodies move so easily with each other? Don’t people step on each other’s toes or fall over each other’s feet? “Is that all you see?”
“I see an incredible dancer. And I wanted you to see her before you audition tomorrow. I wanted you to hear me in your ear, and I wanted you to see us in your head. More than anything, Claire, I want you to believe in yourself.” And when I least expect it, his hand shifts to below my thigh right under my knee and tilts me downward into a fish dive. I improvise as to how I think I’m supposed to be positioned because I’ve watched enough of them, studied enough. It’s a pretty horrible form, but we don’t fall, so I guess that counts for something.
Even though I know I’m not going to get a partner role or any big part, the fact he would do this for me, that he’d go through this to try to show me what he sees in me, means so much. “Thank you, Sebastian. This is so special to me.” But I’m going to be in so much trouble with my mom I may not even get to try out for Nutcracker.
“You still don’t see what I see in the mirror, do you?”
I glance away. “It took years to lose myself.” I shrug. “It’s going to take more than a day and a dance to find me.”

My Review
5 STARS

There are times when I sign up for a book review where I decide to go in blind and this was one of those times. I regret nothing. This book took me by surprise, made my heart ache in ways I was unsure if it could be repaired.

The book is about a young girl Claire, who has been in dance classes for years but has never felt good enough.  She wasn’t as thin as the others and was betrayed by her best friend.  She has a rocky relationship with her mother who had Claire at a young age.  The students bully her in dance class and her teacher makes her feel as if she will never be good enough.  There is one boy there though who wants her to see herself the way he does.

“It is.  You’re pretty.  You’re a great dancer, Claire.  They wish they were you.”

Sebastian see’s this beautiful girl and falls for her right there.  Once he makes his move, he tries to show her what he and everyone else sees, a beautiful person who has so much to give to others.

They are young but in love.  Claire and Sebastian form a connection that helped Claire become who she was supposed to be.

“I let all the memories wash over me like the tides rolling in, pressing my lips against his, and preserving it like a rode dried for all eternity.”

“That’s how I feel about our love.”

“And this moment.”

“And this kiss.”

This story will have your heart bleeding out of your chest, unsure if you will make it through, but your heart will heal, and you will see the beauty of J.B.’s story.

When I was five years old I wanted to be a ballerina, so my mom signed me up for dance. Over the next ten years, I explored all three styles: tap, jazz, and ballet. Tap ended up being my favorite, and I studied it for ten years, ballet for four, and jazz for one.
The years I took ballet, I was told to grow my bangs out, to wear my hair in a bun because that’s what ballerinas do. When I ate my snacks from the convenience store because that’s what my single mom bought me after school on her way to drop me off at the studio, I was ridiculed and told if I lost just a few pounds, I’d be the perfect size for a ballerina. I was in elementary school. Looking back at those pictures, I wasn’t fat. Not even close. After my entire class was promoted to pointe and I wasn’t, I quit ballet.

While this story is fiction, there is a lot of me in Claire, but it only takes a few minutes to read the trending headlines to see that this happens to a widespread audience every day. I think there is a lot of every girl in Claire.

Do you like every part of yourself when you look in the mirror? Or did someone, society, make you feel if you lost just a little bit more weight or changed a small part of who you were, you’d be better in their eyes? And then after so long you found you didn’t like the person you saw through your own eyes, didn’t even recognize her?

Maybe it’s just me, but I don’t think so.

When I started this book, that’s not the message I’d hoped to spread or share, but that’s what it ended up being. Like all of my other books, Claire’s story was cathartic for me because it helped me release a part of my past I didn’t realize I’d been hanging onto so tightly. As much as I loved dance, those years in the studio damaged me. But on the contrary, each day in the studio, each mean girl, each hurtful comment, they took an oyster and produced a pearl. A one-of-a-kind, oddly shaped, uniquely colored, and beautiful pearl.

Every day since writing Heartfall I’ve tried so hard to look in the mirror and find something I like about myself or to ignore something I’d ordinarily criticize, and I challenge you to do the same.

We’re all beautiful and strong women. This is Claire’s story on finding her beauty and strength. Along the way, she’s blessed to find incredible love too. I hope you enjoy it.
